The New Romantics were a pop subculture movement that originated in the United Kingdom. It started in the 1970s and went through to the 1980s. New Romantics were also known as New Wavers and Blitz Kids. The subculture was created by icons such as, Madonna, David Bowie, Boy George and Adam Ant. New Romantics had their own unique style that can be described as flamboyant Hollywood glamour, with blurred lines regarding gender roles. They would often wear cocktail dresses, flared jackets and over the top collars. The most radical clothes of the century were produced in the 1980s. The New Romantics would also wear dramatic make-up in bold colours to help them stand out from the crowd. David Bowie was the muse for the subculture; producing synth-pop (rock and pop music mixed) and having a unique style.

Below, I have created a New Romantics look inspired by Adam Ant.
